THE BATIK PROCESS
Batik (bah-teek) literally means wax written. This process is a method of decorating cloth by covering part of it with a coat of wax and then dyeing the cloth. The waxed area keeps its original color and when the wax is removed the contrast between the dyed and un-dyed area makes a pattern. While the process appears simple, it takes years to master. Only pure, natural fibers such as cotton or silk are used for the cloth, so that it can absorb the wax that is applied in the dye resisting process. The fabrics must also be of a high thread count (densely woven). It is important that cloth of such high quality is used so that the intricate design qualities of batik can be maintained. The result of such painstaking attention to quality and detail is a unique piece of artwork that will be adored for generations. Of course, no two batik designs are ever exactly alike, and will vary slightly in color from the images shown.
