This extremely high quality lamp shade is crafted from batik designed fabric that is stretched over a translucent white plastic shade and reinforced over brass-plate rings at the top and bottom. THE BATIK PROCESS: Batik (bah-teek) literally means wax written. This process is a method of decorating cloth by covering part of it with a coat of wax and then dyeing the cloth. The waxed area keeps its original color and when the wax is removed the contrast between the dyed and un-dyed area makes a pattern. While the process appears simple, it takes years to master. Only pure, natural fibers such as cotton or silk are used for the cloth, so that it can absorb the wax that is applied in the dye resisting process.
